1 What this means in practice
- Travelling on the new passport: the border lookup finds nothing. Expect to be stopped, most likely at airline check-in.
- Carrying both passports: sometimes accepted, but it depends on the officer and on whether the old passport is cancelled in a way that leaves the data page readable. Do not build a trip on it.
2 The reliable fix
Apply again on the new passport. That means a fresh US$90 government fee and another 3 working days of review (sometimes around 1 working day where faster handling is possible — on request, never guaranteed). Build that into your timeline rather than discovering it at the airport.
3 Sequence renewals properly
If your passport expires within a year, renew before applying. A New Zealand eVisa (NZeTA) covers a stay of up to 2 years, so a passport expiring soon will probably outlive its usefulness before the permit does.
4 Also check the expiry rule itself
Separately from all this, your passport generally needs validity beyond the end of a stay of up to 2 years — a passport expiring soon may not support the application in the first place.
5 Before you apply
Work through the New Zealand eVisa (NZeTA) requirements checklist, then continue to the application flow. Other questions for this destination are collected in the New Zealand eVisa (NZeTA) FAQ.
United eVisa Services is a private application-support provider, not a government agency. The immigration authority makes the decision.
